In the framework of the European project FormARTE+, the 1st International Competition on Cultural Heritage in the European Union was launched. The competition took place in VET centers and secondary schools in the four countries participating in the project: Italy, Portugal, Austria and Spain, presenting works carried out in teams by their students that put in value the cultural heritage and/or the care of the natural environment of the Way of St. James.
European Cultural Heritage is a key tool as a didactic resource for training in multiple areas of knowledge and social values and allows the development of new learning dynamics in the field of vocational education training. The FormArte+ project tests and validates a new learning approach based on European Cultural Heritage.
It starts from the Way of St. James as the first European cultural itinerary and the same can be applied to other tourist routes and other cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) of the 4 European countries participating in the project.
Based on these principles, this competition was carried out with the participation of several schools and secondary schools. Among all the international schools participating in the competition, a first selection was made by country, which recognised one work per country, with the first four finalists and winners:
– Escola Secundária de Santa Maria da Feira (Portugal) – Project GEOref
– Colegio Peleteiro (Spain) – Trivial Camino Project
– Denina Pellico Rivoira Secondary School (Italy) – Road Signposting Project
– Boerhaavegasse School (Austria) – Traveller’s Journey Project
Among these four schools, a jury made up of head teachers from different schools selected the “best of the best” project, which went to the Denina Pellico Rivoira Institute (Italy) for its contribution to environmental protection and collaborative work between several classrooms.
As winners of the competition, the Italian school will receive a prize of €1,000 and the other three finalists €500 each. These sums of money will be used to invest in teaching materials and cultural trips.
Form -ARTE+ is a project in which more than 50 VET trainers from different professional fields and 250 young students from 4 European Union countries have already participated. They use an on-line platform and the Service Learning Methodology with their students through a pilot action, that has demonstrated demonstrating the validity of the learning approach and methodology approach, whose thematic axis focuses on the valorisation, rehabilitation and conservation of European Cultural Heritage and the internalisation of environmental and ICT principles, measures and criteria.
